Hi, im seeking help on trying to find out what johnson i have!!!

i recently purchased the outboard, sold as "28-30hp" now i know this was a gamble from the start but for the price i had to take a chance! the engine itself has no markings or plates identifying what it is. it looks atleast 1980's, with a white evinrude cover, and "noresman" logo on the back. inside on the ending itself it has a round disc with "C0059319" and that is all the markins there is on it, the rest have either been removed or painted over. (this was never issue, until now i need a part for it!!!!)

this is the engine on the back of my boat.

further to the issue of not knowing what exact engine it is, i also am trying to remove the copper coolant pipe from inside the leg, to replace, due to a crack in it, any tips on how to get this out would be greatly appreciated!!!

:)

Based upon the graphics on the cowl and the name "Norseman" on it, I think that you have a 1972 40 hp. do a Google search for "1972 Evinrude brochure" and you will see an identical motor in the 40 hp page. Interesing thing is that there was no 28-30 hp in the brochure, it jumped from 25 to 40 but only the 40 hp was called the Norseman.

Looks like an early '70s cowl - possibly a 1972. Look for a freeze plug on the engine block - should have the model number stamped into it. I believe that water tube should just pull out of the grommet - it may just be stuck. Try getting some lubricant on it and see if it comes out.

The 28hp was discontinued after 1964 and the 33hp was discontinued after 1970. That's the reason why you didn't see them.

Re: unidentified engine

Thankyou all so much! I've now been able to order the part, and it's on its way! Still no luck on removing the copper water tube, but one step at a time hey! ;)

Re: unidentified engine

the copper water pickup is fixed to the exhaust plate.. you have to take it off to slide the tube up as it is flared into the plate..

i'm thinking you have to take the powerhead off to access that..unless you can go from under..but I'm preety sure they stack up..not down..

good luck

Re: unidentified engine

i've taken this off, and im trying to move it 'upwards' but its being held in place by a steel ring about an inch long inside of the copper tube at the top. I believe it's just a case of 'enough elbow grease' and it will move!

Thanks will keep you posted! :)

Re: unidentified engine

Well, after lots of grease, twisting and pulling......we drilled it out! The copper had fused to the sides, and this appeard to be the only way, luckly it worked out! next step, new pipe! :)
