Hello I have an interesting problem. I am very proud to say that I brought back a 56 FD 10 from the dead, rebuilt carb, replaced points, coils, cond. wires etc. Got it running great. Now my issue is it looks like I have an issue with the flywheel and the throttle plate that kind of sits below the ignition plate rubbing some times during start up. If the flywheel is turned to a certain position it seems to rub against some portion of the ignition plate. I did notice that the replacement coils seemed to be a bit larger than the original coils. I am wondering if this is the problem. Thus I have two questions for the forum.

1. what is the propper replacement coil part number
2. has anybody else had this issue and what did you do to fix it.

Adjust your coils properly. The ends of the laminated cores should be flush with the machined edges of the posts upon which they sit. Too far out and they will rub on the flywheel magnets. Too far in and they will be too far away from the magnets and you will get weak spark.

I have that same motor and other motors which use the same coils. Here is what I have found for coil numbers by doing research here and other websites. The numbers are as follows starting with original equipment number followed by replacement numbers. 580118...580416...582370...582931...582995........584477(current). This is information from reliable sources and I believe to be correct but I cannot guarantee accuracy. I have other numbers from aftermarket manufacturers if you would like them but I believe if you use the current number(584477) you can cross reference them.

As FR said, just line em up with the bosses below em and it should work fine. I did that on my FD-10 yesterday and was running it today :)

Here's a pic of my FD-10

I had the same problem with my QD-20, it is a 59 10 HP. I found I had to adjust the coils back from the flywheel as far as possible. This included when I did the final tighten on the coil screws, I had to be very careful and be pushing them back as I tightened them up, if I didn't, they would rub.

Thanks to all the motor runs great. Last Q for the group. It takes me about 10 to 15 pulls to get it started when cold. Any ideas on what can be causing this. Once I get it running it runs like a champ. Does the slow idle setting have anything to do with starting.

Is the primer in the tank pushing fuel to the carb?
Is the choke plate closing properly?

Whenever I have an engine that does not start on the first pull and I know the ignition is good I clean and rebuild the carb and that usually fix's her right up. They should all start first pull in my opinion.

Yes on both. I am goging to take the carb apart. I have been having trouble with the main gasket sealing properly. I am going to get another one and try that.

Quick Q for everybody. When I rebuild the carb I basically set the float pin in place and then put the float back on. basically the pin sits on the float arm with nothing like an S clip attaching the float pin to the float arm. Did I do this right. And should I have done anything to adjust the float itself and if so how do I do this.
