Question on fuel filter gasket

I replaced my fuel filter/water separator this spring. Got a Sierra that was required for the boat. This filter looks like an oil filter-has a gasket and spins onto the fuel pump.

My question involves the gasket. I had to take the filter off this week and the gasket had expanded. Meaning it became too big to fit back into the groove on top of the filter housing. The gasket fit perfectly prior to installing. I finally got it back on but this concerns me.

Does this seem normal? Thanks

Howdy,

You might have tightened it way too much when you installed it the first time.

If you put the filter on with only 3/4 to 1 turn after contact, it shouldn't do that. It doesn't have to be all that tight. There's no pressure on it. (it's actually vacuum) Just install it according to the manufacturers recommendation.

Ayuh,... Believe it or Not,.... Fliters are designed for a 1 time usage.....
When you take it Off,... Throw it Away....

Gasoline does that to rubber gaskets, yes it's normal. Like bondo said, the filters are a one time use item.
