I have a 1989 suzuki dt 85. It has sat up for a while and my old merc let me down so I am gonna try and run it. The motor cranks good. I can pull the manual throttle up and let it run around 2000 to 2500 rpm and it will have a miss every 3 to 6 seconds. I replaced the plugs. The carbs were cleaned before I put it up in storage. Just wondering if there is anyway to test the power pack or pickup coil? Or any help would be appreciated.......... Thanks

Hope it was stored properly and you do not have rusted crank and bearings.
Sounds like a lean sneeze.
Did you run it after you cleaned the carbs and stored it?
If so,You probably need to clean the carbs again to get out any dried out fuel/oil or trash out.

A service/repair manual for your motor will give the steps and equipment needed for testing the ignition system

Re: Suzuki dt85 skiping

I decided last night laying in bed I would go ahead and clean the carbs again, just to be sure they were clean. It can't hurt after sitting up. Not to mention it's fairley easy on this motor.

I just ran the motor after cleaning the carbs this morning. It plains out and runs great on top end and mid range. Now it has a worse idle than before. The tp sensor (or what ever you call it) I left it on the middle carb when I cleaned it. The sensor made a click when I moved the throttle arm to WOT. I could'nt hear that after reassembly.(maybe its in my mind do'nt know)
Any opions would be appreciated........ Thanks

Re: Suzuki dt85 skiping

My motor is fixed!!!!
I'll explain what I done so maybe it will help someone else in the future.........

In my last post I mentioned about cleaning the carbs and the throttle valve sensor clicking when I moved the carb to wot. I left the sensor on the carb and sprayed everything clean no oil or dirt anywhere. Well in the mean time i did not realize that in the sensor there is a slide that works on a cam (I assume this is to tell the sensor what to do) There is a spring that pushes this plastic slide to the cam behind the plate on the side of the sensor. This slide was corroded still and the carb cleaner took all lubrication out of the slide and it was held over like the carb was in WOT. I pulled the slide out and the spring witch is very small. I cleaned everything off real good and added a little grease. Needless to say I think the sensor was telling the timing to advance to WOT at idle and this caused a very rough idle. This motor runs great now idles perfect and runs like a raped ape on top end.

I hope this will save someone some money and end a lot of headache sooner for them.
If all you mechanics think this did not help please let me know. I don't wanna lead some one the wrong way.

( I think I'll Have A Beer Now )

Re: Suzuki dt85 skiping

Hi, to not having a service manuel for a 89 DT75, can anyone help with how to properly set the throttle valve sensor??? we just cleaned the carbs. Am getting a like miss every few seconds as well, now wish we had left the throttle valve sensor on the middle carb when cleaning. The speed control knob on the lower cover use to stay on fast setting for a correct idle speed, ran excellence before we did the cleaning. Now the motor has a fast idle and the speed setting has to be on slow for idle speed. The motor has a miss to it as described above. . Sounds identical description on the DT85. Thanks ...

That was it. We removed the TVS and rotated the setting 180 Deg and motor now runs great. Did not see any small spring though. Just some fine tune on the fuel / air mixture and were done. P.S. change your fuel hoses after a couple of years,,, will save you a lot!!!
