Hi,

I got a 62' sea king 5 hp as a gift. It ran great at first then came the issues. At high speeds the motor will start to slow down then run at close to idle even on full throttle. I tried everything like checking the fuel mixture (24:1), checking the spark plugs, checking the carburetor etc. I even spent hours adjusting the lean/rich mixture, it just keeps happening. (By the way, it's getting all the air it needs.) Please Help!

air, fuel, ignition

check your fuel flow...float and needle, etc etc etc...:)

It may be dropping a coil/power after it heats up and only running on one cylinder...check your coils/points/condensors and plug wires and plugs.

Does it slow down suddenly, or gradually, like it is binding up? Is it "tight" when you go to restart it? Let's hope it isn't overheating. However, what I have in mind is the shock absorber in the lower unit. The spring inside breaks, then it expands and causes the motor to bind up.

But if it abruptly cuts in and out, that's an ignition problem. A cylinder not firing. Coils are notorious for cracking. But could be as simple as dirty breaker points or even a bad spark plug.

It slows down gradually but fast.

Overheating or shock absorber. Shock absorber can be replaced, but overheating is terminal. Don't allow it to happen. Make sure the water pump is working.

OK. I think the water pump is working but it only spits out a spray while running. Is that normal?

it also seems to love spitting oil into the water. Also, the motor is only spitting out very little water with more smoke than water. What's wrong?:(

A healthy spray of water is normal. At high speeds, they sometimes more or less flow out rather than spray, but whatever, it should show water at all speeds.

Oil and smoke is normal too. It is because it is a two-stroke and every drop of that oil that you put in the gas goes through the engine. Some burns and makes smoke, the rest goes out the exhaust, into the lake. If that bothers you, use 100% synthetic TCW-3 outboard oil for less smoke and more bio-degradebility.

The oil doesn't bother me but I've been around 2 strokes most of my life, a lot of them outboards, and I have never seen so much smoke come out of them. You can literally see where I've been thanks to a small smoke trail. And, also, the motor will run great at full throttle but it gradually slows down and you have to stop, shut off the motor, wait a few minutes, start it again, and it will do the same thing. I wish I could show you.

Re-read----and heed FRs posts # 6 & #9.

Is the water from the tell-tale too hot to hold your hand in comfortably? If so the 'smoke' you're seeing is steam and your a few runs away from locking up.

If the water from the tell-tale is cool you need to inspect the water flow from the waterpump to the powerhead to see if the water is never reaching the engine or is restricted.

This isn't rocket science! It's a matter of LOGICALLY eliminating one possible problem at a time. Only YOU can do that!

You don't have to show us your vapor trail. If you can eliminate overheating then the only other source is running waaaaaaaaaaay too rich. 24/1 will NOT cause it if the engine is getting the right fuel/air mix. The main jet (in the bottom of the float bowl) should be approximately 1 1/2 turns out from LIGHTLY seated. If it's in that ballpark then look to the operation of the float, float needle, seat and float height adjustment.

Logic. One-step-at-a-time.

please don't bother with anymore responses. The sea king was recently stolen and could not be recovered. It has now been replaced with a brand new 2011 Tohatsu 5hp. Sorry guys.
