IO: shifting into forward

mercruiser IO v8 in rinker captiva 212: The engine is chucking or racheting when shifting into forward...perfect in reverse though...what is the problem...please help

Alpah Drive? Are you shifting "crisply"? Dog clutch on the alpha drive need to be shifted on the assertive side- don't ease it- that causes my shifts to ratchet a bit.
If that's not the issue, then possibly a cable adjustment is in order?

I am shifting as you would shift a car...if I shift to hard, it not only shifts, but jumps forward with speed because i moved the throttle down almost too far in order to get it into forward gear; therefore, I am more careful to not 'overshift' and that causes the engine clatterings into gear.
