ok so i got a 1967 evinrude 6hp fishermen for $50 rebuilt the carb noticed on the intake that that one of the studs for the carberator was stripped (by previous owner then tried to epoxy the stud in) so i replaced the manifold and gasket. the motor runs and idles fine and throttles up in nuetral but when put in gear its like it has no power tested it on a 1436 jon and only got 5mph been thinkin it through and checking everything even checked the compression wich was less then 30psi on both cylinders which tells me that the rings are gone? any way to get a engine rebuild kit for this motor i have tried looking with no luck any sugestions would be great

thanks
Jon

30#'s a side is toast. Should be 70-80#'s or so minimum. It could be a head gasket, I had one go on my 5.5 before (same block). Or you could try a decarb. I'd pull the head off and see what things look like inside.

Oh, and welcome to the forum :)

i pulled the head the rings and pistons look good i guess but not really sure what they should look like and the cylinder walls look good and smooth the head gasket is in tact but a lil brittle. the pistons as well as the head had alot of carbon build up on them and i cleaned it all off with some sea foam

change the head gasket throw her all back together and call it the day? or go ahead and change the rings as well while i got it tore apart?

id do the head gasket first and try some seafoam or with a bottle spary some mix in each cylider...i would then re-check compression, if its better then you saved yourself the work if not you may have to dig deeper

also, how many pulls did you do?..you may have to give her a few good strong pulls

well now i feel like an idiot so now i dont really know if i had good or bad compression and i tore the motor all the way down *face palm* and one of the rings broke on me after i removed one of the pistons.

heres my question now is this motor worth spending the money on new rings since one broke a head gasket and so on? or should i just part it out?

I guess if it were mine I would fix it up. But I really like those motors.

i would like the fact of having an old motor that runs strong but is $250 total in the motor worth it?

Crap, you already took it apart right down to the pistons. That was fast. I think a set of rings is $60-70 or so, but I'm not sure as I never buy em. It's up to you if you put it back together or not. A good running 6hp will fetch $350-$400 in my neck of the woods.
