Hello,

Need some help!

I have a 1977 9hp evinrude that I Used a year ago and put it away without winterizing.

I went to use it this summer and the pull cord would not pull it over. I put some 2 stroke oil in the cylinders and let it sit for a bit. I was then able to turn it over with a breaker bar. It would then turn over with the pull cord but with some resistance.

Just wondering where I should start... I am thinking it is the rings. I have worked on cars and motorcycles but don't have allot of experience on boat motors.

The worst if it is, the motor is my parents in laws....

Hmmm. I assume you mean a 9.9hp. It sounds like it's rusted up. Not good. With the plugs out does it spin freely with the pull starter? Also, check the compression on it.

Remove spark plugs, arrange engine so that plug hole are facing straight up. Force flywheel so that both pistons are at a equal height (all valve ports covered).

Pour in enough SeaFoam to cover the piston tops. Let sit overnight.

Problem is ethanol which attracts moisture (steel rusts), and it also raises cane with the carburetor gaskets, o rings, etc..... ethanol sucks! You must not allow ethanol tainted gasoline to sit for any great length of time..... many owner manuals state this fact.... lawn mowers, edgers, chainsaws, weedwackers, etc.

If anyone knows of a gasoline distributor in the central west Florida area (Tampa, Brandon, Valrico, etc) that DOES NOT taint gasoline with ethanol, I appreciate hearing from you.

Hey Samo ott

It does spin a bit easier but still does not pull over like it should.

I have not checked the compression yet.

Are there engine kits available? Head gaskets ect?

Thanks

You really think SeaFoam will save the engine?

Sea Foam might help enough to get it started, run the first tank of fuel with extra oil in it. When you get it running do a compression check and see what you have.

Why would I state that if I didn't feel that it was worth a shot?
