what is the normal operating temp. of a 4.3l with open cooling? Also, should I be concerned if one riser is cool as a cucumber and the other is hot, on muffs at up to 1500 rpm in my backyard?

thanks in advance , I have just completed a engine swap and converted to electric fuel pump and all my questions posted were accurately answered. I would not have been able to tackle this job without all your help.

I agree....one is "cool" and one is "pretty darn warm". For mine, the starboard is always warmer than the port side. So far, no issues.

well it is showing about 125 but I am just paranoid . if I put the impeller in back wards or missed the key , would I get water up to the motor? I have not put in the water yet, just want to address a possible issue before I drive all the way to water.

Mine runs about 170-180 depending on water temp outside. usually around the 170 mark. Sometimes one riser is hotter than the other as well, then sometimes the same. Boat only has 29 hours on it and its always been like that.

that 170* is ENGINE temp, not riser temp. The risers will be cooler.Should be able to put a bare hand on them without getting burned...

Mine has always shown 170 normal operating temp on my 4.3 at the gauge. My manifolds have never showed the same temp when checked with a infared thermometer one is always warmer than the other.

My '93 4.3LX shows 125 at the gauge, and an IR gun shows 137 at the base of the sending unit. Has a 140 tstat.
