Hi Everone I hope someone can help at my end ropes here it goes OK I have a 1990 90 HP mercury outboard the tilt& trim was working but when I came in yesterday to put in on the trailer could not get the engine to come up It been working fine all season anyway as I came in I was trying to lift the motor when it was going on the trailer while trottleing couldn't get it on the trailer right so I back up in reverse and went back out turn around and went back on the trailer but just then the tilt &trim did not work but then I tryed it again after playing with the shift (trottle ) it came up slow. Anyway got it home and try it again and it worked then all of a sudden it went down and stop will not come up as I hit the Buttom for the tilt&trim all I hear is a clicking sound so I pulled the cowl off and the noise was coming from the solenoid. Now I know there is 3 of them one for the started and the other 2 for the tilt&trim I am asumeing. The clicking was coming from one of them could not tell they both were clicking now I thought it was the upper on so I replace it And still nothing my first question is since they are both clicking do I have to replace both of them would 2 go bad. or Now I am asumeing again could it be the wire down to the motor to the tilt&trim. or the tilt& trim motor it self. But it seems like there is no juice getting to the motor the 2 solenoids just click when I hit the switch to bring it up. I check the battery I put a full charge on it so I know thats good engine turn over fine nothing wrong with that. Like I said I had it working for a few times when I got it home but then it went down and stayed down now all I get is clicking from the soleniods. Please Help also someone told me to get the engine up i can unscrew the plug that hold the fluid and pick up the engine manually. Again anyone out there Please help answer on here also if like to email me at [Thank you again sorry for so long of a question Ed

Ed, it sounds like you might have a loose or bad connection. If it worked, then it didn't, then it worked, then ect, thats exactly what it sounds like. Trace your wiring from the switch starting with your connection there and see if you find anything. Alot of times it could even be your ground. Hope that helps.

Re: Tilt&trim

Okay I will give you a few tips (what I would do) .....

I have a manual that only cover's to the 1989 model year however there are a bunch of electrical tests with a small multimeter that it suggests ..........

W/o a manual step one would be to get a manual.

Disconnect the battery (and put a charger on the battery while you are working)

I would first remove each wire, sand the connection and re-install. I am real picky when I do this. Some of the trim systems used an inline fuse, some a circuit breaker and others did not (I don't have your schematic)

Use the manual release screw and lift the motor to full height and manually lock it in place. Check and fill the fluid. Look at the trim limit switch and make sure the wires are in good shape. Now manually lower the motor and be sure to re-tighten the release screw.

About 75% of all tilt and trim issues are normally connections and bad wires. If you see wires that appear green ..... you should replace that wire with the proper gauge and marine grade wire.

Re-connect your battery and give it a shot.

Re: tilt and trim Not working HELP PLEASE

Hi Bob Thank you so much I did everthing you where saying and while I was doing that I happen to pull on the wire going into the trim motor and just for the hack of it when I hit the leads with a screwdriver it worked so what I did was on the top where the wire goe's into the motor I took of the cover metal plate that held the wire into place and I notice the wire was twisted so I untwisted the wire closed it up and put 2 pull ties to hold the wire tight and I also tighen the wireholders after I did all that I wiggle the Hack out of the wire pulled on it and did everthing I could but to no avail the trim kepth on working fine UP&Down trim was no problem. I would guess what it was but I won't if you like to take a guess be my guess ok Thanks again Ed

Ed,
If it was a single black wire, that would possibly be your ground. Sometimes we just get lucky.

Re: tilt and trim Not working HELP PLEASE

Thanks wing yea your right sometimes we do get lucky I even hook up the hse tonight and ran the motor for a few with no problems with the tilt&trim it went up and down with no problem. So yea the luck was with me . Only question I do have if anyone could answer this is I lost a little fluid when I went to open the plug on the resvior so when the motor is up and no pressure is on and I open up the plug to top it off will any more fluid come out and how much fluid do I put into the tilt&trim unit Thanks again Ed

Re: tilt and trim Not working HELP PLEASE

If its working fine with no "hopping" when you lower or raise it then you should have enough fluid in the reservoir. if it came out while you had it up and no pressure, there may have been too much. which is not good as it can put pressure on your seals.
