Welcome to the iboats.com forum. The experts here, which I am not, can help you with any question about your boat, motor and trailer. Most motor questions should include the model number to help responders accurately identify your motor's configuration. Some of those old V4's had magneto ignitions and some had an automotive-type battery energized ignition system with a coil and a distributor with points and condensors. Good luck!

You better hope you don't have 12V going to that side post. It will explode the coil if you do. It is self-powered magneto ignition.

Remove the distributor cap and see if you have spark from the coil button.

You DO have the key turned on......don't you?

You cleaned the points, they are in the magneto.
What is your model number?

DAVIET the model number is 60653r.The points are in the top of the distributor. Looking at the engine & looking at a blowup parts diagram of the distributor I cant find a magneto.Would you know the ohm readings for the coil? Thanks for your help. And yes I have checked the points & sanded the tips.& also put a new cond. in.

"MAGNETO", as used in outboards and other small engines is a generic term meaning the entire ignition system. It generates its own electricity, as opposed to battery ignition, which is powered by a 12v battery. We won't get into electronic, CD, and such.

Technically, the word "magneto" means a generator composed of a coil and moving magnets. Or a fixed magnet and moving coil.

On your magneto, the magnets are in the black housing, and a rotor makes the magnetic field "move". The coil is between them.

I told you to see if you have spark off the coil button. Did you do as I said? That will isolate the trouble to the magneto portion and/or the distributor portion.

FR thank you for your info although i have some understanding of a magneto.Where it was located was a different story. Also yes i have checked & i have no spark off the coil. But what i was asking ,did anyone know what the ohm reading would be on that coil.Working on auto i know you can test a coil with a ohm meter.
