Is there an way to seperate the upper driveshaft from the lower driveshaft without having to remove the entire driveshaft from the lower unit?

I have the small gearcase for a 1997 Johnson faststrike, I am needing to replace the lower unit and I am unable to get the upper driveshaft out of the old unit after removing the bearing and shims. If I have to remove the entire driveshaft does that mean I have to tear apart the brand new complete assembly unit I bought just to install the upper driveshaft?

BRP makes a special puller for this. I would recommed you take the old g/c into an Evinrude dealer and have them pull it out for you. Being it's a 1997 it should have a two piece d/s. Then install the old d/s in new g/s with a block of wood and and a hammer until it seats. Be gentel.

Thanks for the advice, the dealer charged me $20 but it was well worth it, the new G/C is on and will be tested soon.

You got away cheap. If you wanted to buy that special tool to do the job 10 yrs ago in the special tool catalog it was $65.00. Glad you made out okay.
