Re: noises in outdrive

YOU SHOULD NOT BE RUNNING THE MOTOR WITH THE OUTDRIVE IN THE TRAILER POSITION.

Its probably your u joints making noise, even with the prop not spinning there are internal shafts that move with the engine. With the out drive tilted all the way up there is lots of stress on these joints.

Man in doctors office:
Hey doc, when it tie my arm around my head it hurts.
Doctor, then dont tie it around your head.

You never want to run it with the leg above the full up trim position, unless your trying to break it.

I have to correct you guys. It is OK to run Merc outdrives in the full-up trailer position as long as the engine RPM stays at idle. The manual recommends no more than 1200 RPM, but to me that's pushing it.

The knuckles, or u-joints, will make noise when it's full up. That's normal.

Your totally correct. I just didn't feel like getting into it that far. No offense to the op but it seemed like maybe hes new at this and maybe one thing at a time was better.

IMHO, just because you CAN do it, does not mean you SHOULD do it. If its making noise its causing damage. Don't run in the trailer position. If it is just at max non trailer height and making noise have your trim limit sensor checked.

Also, you may want to pull the drive and grease the U-Joints in the bellows and the gimbal bearing. It won't hurt and it could save you alot in the long run.
