i have seen people who not only put on a snap in cockpit and bow cover but then also put a full boat cover on top of the previous 2. Is there any benefit from doing that? Any harm in doing that? will it breath? Mildew?

Befotre I. Was able to get my boat in the garage I kept it under bow/cockpit covers plus a full cover PLUS a ...BAT= big a#* tarp! That protected the gelcoat on the sides, red fades.
I put dehumidifiers in there too. The better protected the longer it stays shiny and new looking. Just my opinion.

The bow and cockpit covers generally still let a little water into the boat. I personally don't have bow or cockpit covers. During the season, I only put the fitted boat cover on the boat. In the winter it lives with the boat cover and a tarp over that.

I use a snap on bow and cockpit cover and then a cheap wally world cover as a mooring. Stored on land, always dry inside.

one old cheap cover on the center console. the rest of the boat does fine.
I have a single boat cover on an old Whaler. Some water drips through, and then drains out. No problem.
One trick I heard to combat moisture on a covered boat (long term) is to open a bag of charcoal and leave it in there; it absorbs a lot of the moisture that inevitably accumulates.
You can't keep all the moisture out, so focus on dealing with what will be in there regardless. Let some air circulate. I think a tarp on top of a fabric cover is asking for problems.

I use a cockpit cover that gets a yearly coating of Kiwi Camp Dry. The Camp Dry keeps it water proof. And I always leave the plug out, just in case.

I do the same thing. It's also stored under one of those temporary garage thingies.

Open bag of charcoal, I like that idea. But why not all the time? As long as the charcoal is in a container.

convenience. Same reason lots of people don't cover a boat, especially during the "season." covering a moored boat is especially a pain. so would be moving around an open bag of charcoal.

I don't think that a bag of charcoal will do much on a weekly basis anyway. In a bucket, you only have the top surface working. The open bag is more surface, but a mess to move more than once in the spring.

Along these lines, those silica packs that come in electronics and say, DO NOT EAT:
Get them out of the stew pot and put them in tackles boxes, glove compartments, or other closed small areas in the boat and your equipment. After a year, then you can eat them.

Thanks for reminding me. I forgot to mention that when i do my off season cover then tarp deal, I put those on with spacers between the cover and the boat which opens up a pathway for air to get in and out. I put 4 total, 2 on each side of the boat. I use just whatever I have available.
