Unless you're stopped long enough for the motor to cool down (more than 2-3 hours-- not what I'd call a run & gun offense), then I think your problem might be with warm starts. Carb float valves get worn down, let a little fuel seep through when you stop, flood the motor just a bit. Lifting the hi-idle lever alleviates the symptom by advancing the timing and letting more air through. It's burning off the excess gas rather than "warming up."
If that's what's happening, carb rebuild with new kits will fix ya right up.
