I am of the assumption that 90% of tonights state of the union address will be about the war in Iraq and Afganistan.
I would like to hear more about the direction of the supreme court, immigration, and how to get more manufacturing jobs to remain in the USA.
It is my contention that in the advent of this information and technology era, the common perception is that it is better for other nations to manufacture all that America needs, i happen to disagree with that philosophy.
Manufacturing Jobs created and sustained the middle classes, who with all intense and purposes do pay the lion share of the taxes needed to fund and protect this nation.

With all due respect Ken, I voted for this President to lead not to follow.

It is of great importance that the president of the USA be able to walk and chew gum at the same time.

Granted we are a nation at war, the USA is not a one dimensional country, it is in our nations national interest for this President to seriously address the trade imbalances imposed on our economy by the unfair practices of our trading partners.

Fudge, for two guys who have in the past been so far apart on the political agenda, I agree with you 100%. Labor has made this country what it is today and without it we are only another Europe.

This state of the union speech is going to try to prop up the Repubs for the midterm election.

C'mon guys, i'm not into bashing and making fun of the president. I cannot bring myself to believe that this state of the union speech is all about propping up party members going into mid term elections, surely its wishful thinking upon your part.

We have already had the hydrogen fuel cell speech, we've also watched his planned social security fix sadly go down in flames.

I see a very weak immigration policy, a deficient energy policy at best and a policy of capitulation when it comes to playing hardball on trade issues, by that i mean us having to succumb to and give up our sense of justice and fair play with regards to trade in order to gain the support needed from our so called allies, in order to fulfill our foreign policy commitments, which no doubt benefits them as well, if not more in the long run.
Imagine a day when we no longer have a manufactured product to sell abroad :(

Elmer, what a defeatist attitude. The Republican party has been the rulers in our country for starting 6 years and you want to complain.

I give the majority full credit for what our country has become and what we are seen as by the rest of the world (including our so-called allies). If you presently happy with our present condition you should remain 100% behind this government and our leader.

If not, changes can be made this year. We shall see. Oh and hopefully Delay will be in prison by then.

I disagree that 90% is going to be about the war in Iraq and Afganistan. I think that there will be a lot on the war on terror but no where near 90%. He will talk a lot about the ecomomy. He will also talk about the problem the world is now having with Iran. He probably won't say much about the Supreme court except to congratulate Judge Alito. (if the left wingers don't try another stunt) He really doesn't know the direction the court will go, that is up to the judges.

Probably not much about illegal immigration, that is a touchy subject with Republicans and Democrats alike. I don't know what he can say about getting manfacturing jobs to stay here. One of the largest problems is Americans buying foreign cars then crying that they cannot get a good paying job. We reap what we sow.

Re: Mr President,.. Get on with it

I predict he will again tell us how wonderful democracy is, and how it is transforming the region...regardless of the reality.

The concept of "Truthiness" the word Steven Colbert coined to describe the ability to take events and give them qualities we'd like them to have, rather than what they really mean.

And he will mostly concentrate on domestic issues, and talk about the need for affordable healthcare, etc.

When he gets in political trouble he moves to the left with his speeches. He always governs and molds policy from the far right, and still will, but his speech moves dramatically to the left.

You could flip-flop (pun intended) the right and left in that statement and you have Bill Clinton . . . ;) Are you trying to say that GWB is a politician?

Hey Elmer you are right, I should no start bashing till I see what it is he is saying. Most likely will see things with my two eyes, and hear things with my two ears, that differ with what the majority of this board thinks. Sadly that seems to be the way the rest of the country is .It would be nice if the people that we put into office could represent the whole population rather that the narrow demographic that they seem to favor. Will talk to you tomorrow and see if we can agree on what was said.

This is not a problem that has started six years ago, this is a problem that has been allowed to fester since the Kennedy and Johnson era of government, accelerated by Nixon, and has been cruising along with the help of successive democratic and republican adminstrations.

Sorry for not playing your "gottcha lets bash the president" game.

the aim of this thread is to get a sense of what the expectations and priorities are of the membership with regards to past, present and future presidents.

Re: Mr President,.. Get on with it

You are wrong about Clinton. He was centrist on most issues, right on some (like free trade, welfare reform, etc.), and left on some issues (like health care) He was there from the start, he stuck to that position throughout.

The current crop of dems would do well to take lessons from Clinton in how to win elections and how to govern. None of them seem to want to take a stand in any way opposing their base, and they won't win that way, and if they win, they will fail at governing.

I don't care what the radical right thinks, there is a reason why Clinton left with a 70 % approval rating despite his obvious personal flaws, and there is a reason why Bush is hovering around 40% approval.
