Now that I have a 4bbl carb on the way to use on my 888/302, I may need to consider mounting it on the 2bbl manifold temporarily for a number of reasons. I'm looking at one of these:

http://www.mrgasket.com/ProductDeta...78&majID=225&minID=&selection=5&minselection=

I'm not fond of this idea, but if I want to get the carb on and set up, I may need to. Just how bad of an idea is this? How restrictive? Breathing through a straw, or will see some improvement over the 2bbl - but not all until I get that al 4bbl dual plane I want?

Ayuh............
All the time,+ money you Waste on Tuning it to work on that Choked up 2bbl. manifold,
could go to the cost of the 4bbl. manifold...........

It would not work anyway if used to mount a 4 bbl on a 2 bbl manifold. There would not be enough clearance for the throttle valves to open.

As a point of note, Volvo uses a similar if not the same adapter to put 2 barrel Holleys on real nice high rise 4 bbl manifolds on their 5.0 and 5.7 litre V8s. Makes for an easy upgrade to 4 bbl power. Unfortunately these are chevies and not wehat you need.

You will have at least $25.00 in it; product plus shipping. Put on a good used intake from the scrap yard, and be ready to go when the new carb arrives. :)

Darren... A single plane manifold on a boat? That should kill what little low end torque a 302 can make. The 3rd choice, a Performer 289, wouldn't be too bad, though it was based on the 289. Edelbrock does make a version called Performer 302 and it has a much different and smoother runner design.

Actually, a small 2 barrel on the single plane intake might be okay, some loss of bottem end but slightly better breathing at the top.

Thanks guys, you confirmed my gut feeling. If nothing else, had to toss that idea out to for confirmation that it was a bad plan. Looks like I'll wait until I can locate an Intake I like. It's a ways to spring and this project has been bumped down the list due to a repair need on my fishing boat. This is just an upgrade. I was thinking of saving my pennies for an Edelbrock Performer or Weiland equivalent, so I'll stick with that plan unless I happen across an al-4bbl locally.

Just for curiosity, how much less does an aluminum weigh than a cast?

A bunch. The weight of the iron ones are different, but you'll think you're holding a bag of cement out there when you try to carefully install one without disturbing the intake gaskets.

The Al. one: You almost have to look down to realize you're holding anything at all. I've never weighed one, but they can't be more than about 10 pounds at the most. Al. is light, and they're almost totally hollow besides.

If it was me, I'd sure try to scrounge a Al. one if I was doing that job. Also, lots of folks say you need to re-torque the Al. intakes after a few hours due to their expansion rates. I hear they can crush the gasket when they heat up a few times and on ocassion will leak if they aren't re-torqued. No biggie, just the nature of the beast.

Thanks Winger. The weight is definetly an issue for me. The boat is tail heavy as is with teh V8 back there, so any weight I can shave off helps. I think I say that an AL one weighs about 7lbs, just not sure what the average cast intake weighs. It's been too long since I picked one up.

Edelbrock dual plain air gap aluminum intake. Used in this boat for 4 years. I had it off this past summer for a cam and lifters install. Inside and out it looked new. I run in brackish bay water.

Re: 2bbl to 4bbl carb/intake adapter

I only run in fresh. Finally git the specs on teh carb from Holley today. 1972 4160 4bbl, 600cfm, 300 on the primaries/300 on the secondaries. Originally from a 351W. Hopefully with that size primaries I won'y lose and low eng, but when the secondaries kick in, she should giddy-up. Im considering the Edelbrock Performer 289, Performer 302, or a Weiand that Holley recommended. Will likely boil down to what I can find. I'm trying to avoid buying new.
