After using boat several times this year, all of a sudden our boat won't go faster than 10rpms. Could this be a carb problem, bad gas prob. (prob. started after filling up gas) or do we need to rebuild engine?

Re: RPMs

Could be anything, without any information indicating engine model or year, or anything else it's hard to say.
It will take some troubleshooting, and the starter should turn the engine over faster than 10 rpm.
Have you done anything to the engine? Like checking the fuel filter for water, or doing a tuneup?

Re: RPMs

....by 10 rpm, I'm thinking you mean 1000 (10X100).

Has it run smooth all season, or has it been getting more sluggish?

Re: RPMs

Was rushing when posted original inquiry. No, the boat has been working fine until the last time we went out. Put the boat in gear and got the engine up to about 40rpm, but then the boat didn't go faster than 5 mph. Thinking it is transmission. Hoping it is something easier. We were low on gas and filled it up right before heading out. Coincidence?

you need to tell people what you have and what year it is if you want any help

water in the fuel is the simple place to start

do you have a water sepator ? if so dump it into a glass jar and see if water forms at the bottom

tommays

Hold on there babaloo . . . Me thinks jh19 was on to this one, but the story has definitely changed. I think he is saying that it only goes 5 MPH at 4000 RPM. It's either that or Harold Paratestes is baaaccck :D

Sounds like a spun propeller hub or something major wrong in the drive

Re: RPMs

I have never mixed up speed and rpm and have separate gauges for both, but lakelover is really confusing me.

Re: RPMs

Hello,

I had a lack of power /low rpms on my 4.3L. Change the spark plug wires regardless of how they look. I did mine tonight and took it out for a spin. All is fine @ 4200 RPMS a WOT

Chuck
