Hey folks,

Ok well here is the story...

I bought this 1984 Tempest Cuddy (20'x8'x3.5') with a 1984 OMC 3.8L Sterndrive. The boat sat all winter with half of tank of gas (may not mean anything) and when I bought the boat 1.5 weeks ago there was/is water in the fuel.

Took the boat out on the lake, full throttle gave me 4000 RPMs and then it would go SPLAT - POP - POOF - POOP and shut off.

Took the boat back to my marina and the mechanic pulled off the fuel filter (water seperator?) and there was lots of water in it. The mechanic told me when it starts to studder like that pull the fuel filter off and drump the water (in a bucket). Its been running fine the last few days as long as I dont go over 3000 RPMs but today I was out and couldn't get past 1500 RPMs. The Marine Police towed me to a marina and a mechanic pulled the fuel filter off and sure enough, more water.

He told me I need to open the cap on the tank under the floor hatch and use a pump to get the water out. Then I need to pull the carbs off and get the water out of the carb and clean it.

Problem is I can't find a mechanic on the lake that isn't backlogged 2-3 weeks!!!

My questions are:

1) Having never done this before, should I attempt it?
2) If I should attempt it, How do I do it?

This is whitefish time here (see today's catch Here and in 2 weeks the bite will be over. Plus mechanics here are very expensive, average $80 per hour.

One boater told me to add Methol to the fuel to vapourize the water but that scares me since not one mechanic (3 looked at my boat) mentioned it.

Any advice, guidance, tips/tricks would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

John
1984 Tempest Cuddy w/ 1984 OMC 3.8L Sterndrive

Water sinks to the bottom in gas. If you raise the front of your boat so the front of the tank is higher than the back, the water will all be at the back of the tank. Then just use a small diameter copper tube hooked to a clear hose, hooked to a small electric fuel pump and suck all the water and junk off the bottom of the tank. Use some care and common sense, and think about what your doing with gasoline. It will kill you.
After you clean the tank, you may have to clean out the carb as well. And if it hasn't been tuned up this year, it's also time for new points, condenser, plugs, cap, rotor, dwell adjustment, timing................ you know. Standard maintenance items.

If you cant do it yourself you dont need a marine mechanic to do a carb and tuneup. Maybe you could find an auto mechanic that could do it for you

in my jet ski I used a hand pump siphon to remove water and then I found some fuel dry stuff at autozone.

You're gonna need a manual...

Your point are mounted on the distributer under your cap. You prob need someone to show you once and get a manual to learn about these things. The points open and close on the lobes of the dist which tells your coil to fire

John,
I would try to clean the fuel tank etc yourself before hiring somebody. See how accessable the tank is, see if you can get it drained to the point where you can verify it is free of water, (a couple drops won't hurt). After it's drained, add fresh fuel, and some drygas in case there was some residual water.
The carb and filters come next. Again, drain, dry, make sure no more water. If you have never done a carb, a manual is a good idea.. Some of them are very easy to remove and clean. Once inside you may find a lot more than water, crud etc. (water=rust=crud).
Once this is done, I would check that filter regularly for a bit and see if it's taking on water into the tank, which will lead to the same problem very quickly!
good luck

There is one other thing to add, when you winterize make sure to fill tank and use the proper amount of fuel stabalizer. Along with all of the proper procedures for winterizing.
