The speedometer on my 1996 Mercruiser 5.7L with Alpha One Gen 2 drive operates poorly. It does register, but inconsistently and at least 15 MPH below actual speed. Since I'm fairly inexperienced, are there any easy things I can do to fix it?

about the only thing you can do is be sure the hole in the drive is clear

you can blow out the line from the speedo back and be sure the tubeing is not kinked

for the most part the speedos are of very low quality

the good ones like airguide speedometers work very well but they went out of Business

tommays

Thanks Tom. I guess I will have to go the GPS route.

You have something clogging the tube. Disconnect and blow it out from one end, and then the other end. Royal pain in the a$$ those speedo tubes.
Search this post for hundreds of entries on this topic.

Replace the whole unit with a paddle wheel speedo.

Are there any other speedos out there that use new technology?

Yes they are called GPS units. Higher end boats have them built in dash. I carry my handheld on my dash.

Bob

What does a simple handheld model cost, and what's a good brand?

Where can I get a manual to show me how to do this? And difficult is the procedure?
