Engine is a 1985 Mercruiser 5.0l (305) 200hp with less than 200 total hours on it.

It has not been in much use over the last few years and was winterized 5 years ago and just brough back into service this year.

When the boat is on the trailer the trim/tilt mechanism works fine, but once in the water it begins to "act up". Like after being on plane then slowing back down the trim/tilt does not wan to work. It takes several minutes of fiddling with the switches before they will work again.

I have checked all of the connections and wires leading to the trim cylinder, they all appear to tbe okay and the oil level in the cyl. is at spec.
ANY IDEAS? This one is quite annoying and really spoiling an otherwise good boat.

Here is a link to the Mercruiser service manual. If you look in section 1-C (Troubleshooting) there are wiring diagrams and test procedures for tracking down your problem.

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf

You may have to run your curser over the pages to locate different links, they aren't always obvious.

Thanks, Don. I had thought of replacing the pump unit as the lines and the cylinders look fine. That might be drastic, but I will start with the troubleshooting section.
