I have a 1985 OMC Upper gear case that need to be replaced and other than going out and trying to find and buy a new one a friend has either a 1974, or a 1975 rebuilt Upper gear case. my question is would this interchangeable with each other.

I would also replace ball gears.....a mismatched set will wear out.

Thank you, basically all I really need would be the upper gear housing, all the gears in my case are fine, a large chunk of my upper gear case housing broke off and what makes that even worse it was the part that my tilt unit was attached to. per your reply then I should be able to swap out gears and put a new seal kit in it and this shoud be fine, is this correct?

Is the '85 a cobra or stringer drive?

Hey dude... knock yourself out... do whatever you like... If I really wanted to **** on your parade I'd have kept my mouth shut from the get go... let you go through the time, trouble and $$ to find out that there were high profile and low profile gear cases in the 70's. '85 was the last year for the Stringer and all of those are low profile, to the best of my knowledge.

Talk about rain.... here's a downpour... you don't have the necessary tools required to do the gear swap even if you find a useable case.

Look...DUDE, I was just trying to find if the two cases would be compatible to swap out gears and maybe learn something about them. I had no intentions of coming off like I offended you. I apologies if I did.Perhaps a little more detail to the best of you knowledge " I believe you will find they are incompatible.
Sorry" would have helped me a little more. Both gear cases are low profile that came out of a 140 hp 3.0 liter engine. as I said I am new to this forum and just wanted to try and learn something...... either that will or wont work and why? or who to talk to for more information. I didnt think this was too much.....

As far as down pouring.... I think my access of tolls and knowledge of gear swapping would be more than adequate

sputnam, let me know how the conversion goes. I would be interested in the 3.0l gears that you take out.
