Hi there. I had a loose fitting (pictured) on my reverse lockout valve. I took it off to put some teflon tape on it and retighten it. Surprise! when I took it off the unknown to me ball and spring popped out. I put the spring in first then the ball. Was this correct? I have actual merc manuals but they don't show the ball they just say to watch out for them. 1974 Mercruiser 140.

The ball goes in first then the spring. The ball seats in the housing acting as a check valve. There are 2 in there. The other is smaller.

Don, thanks for the prompt reply.
You say there are 2 balls in there.
Are they touching each other or is the other ball in another location?
The reason I put the spring in first is that the ball seemed to fit better into the elbow fitting than the spring.

There may or may not be 2 balls in there, depending on which one you have. But since only one came out, put the ball in first then the spring.
The spring doesn't fit IN the fitting, the fitting hold pressure on the spring which pushes the ball into it's seat.
PS: In the future, loose the teflon tape, it causes more problems that it cures.

Thanks again Don. I think only one came out, at least that's all I found in the bilge. I'll put the ball in first. I guess I'll know if it works when I put it in reverse.

on an older outdrive trim system it keeps the drive from riseing out of the water in reverse

the clutch dogs have angles that lock the drive into gear when the motor is runing which is why you cant get it out of gear

you dont say WHAT YOU HAVE but in general there is a switch that kills the motor long enough to allow it to come out of gear

if you post a new topic with you info someone will be able to help you

tommays

ricksl1 , check out this thread too:

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=012399

I have the same problem on my 1979s and it's due to the cutoff (also called interrupt) switch tommays mentioned above not working. If your switch is functional you may need to just adjust it. If the switch is damaged, you're in a pickle as those switches are no longer available. You can go with the solution I used mentioned in the thread above, or you'll have to find a used switch.

If the switch is functioning, this link will help you test and adjust the cables and switch. Go to page 40. Note it is showing the new style plate in the diagrams but the process is basically the same:

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6C1R3.PDF
