Can you replace a Gimbal Bearing without buying all of the expensive specialty tools? If you can do it, what can you use instead?

Tools you will need: Large internal snap ring pliers, slide hammer (unless you want to pull the engine and drive the bearing out from the inside), and a hammer and drift pin. No real specialty tools needed for this job.

Re: Replacing Gimbal Bearing

gspig forgot big allen wrench and cheater bar for trim bolts, bellows expander, alignment shaft, shift cable socket, possibly a heat source (torch?), and a BAH (big a** hammer). and also a clamp crimper if replacing the shift bellows. you also need a good cuss word vocabulary and a lot of patience. if you are considering this as a DIY, read some of the post about it and do a Google search on the topic. almost forgot, bellows adhesive required too. if you have a buddy at a boat repair shop, you might borrow some tools, but you will need some items not commonly found at Sears.

I can remove my gimbal bearing without removing the bell housing. I didn't realize that was necessary. ;)

You could get a slide hammer at an autozone if theres one in sharpsburg. but then you would also need an alignment tool and a bearing driver.<br />Call around, we have a place in northern cincinnati that rents those special tools if you are close enough.
