I have a fiberglass fuel tank circa 1985 in my boat. I seem to have constant fuel problems. It gets the fuel pickup screen plugged up with tiny glass fibers.

Anyone ever had this problem??
Do I just keep cleaning the screen or is there another way?
Or should I change out the tank? :(

Tank is under the floor in the center of the boat.

I don't see any solution, other than to replace the tank or keep on cleaning the screen. Unless you have room for a plastic tank somewhere on the floor of the boat. Sounds like the glass is starting to come apart anyway. I would be leary of the tank. How often does it clog up?

Re: Fiberglass Fuel Tank Problems

This is my 3rd season with this boat and I have had a fuel supply problem atleast once or twice each season.

In the past I had a fuel starvation problem and would put the boat on the trailer and go home.
On the ride home the fuel pickup would clear itself. This made it hard to find.

Last year the boat was in the slip and I got the problem again. I removed the fuel pickup after trying to suck fuel from the tank. I thought the problem was the anti siphon valve. It may have been the glass fibers in the screen then.

I had the boat out on Wednesday and it did it again. This time the screen was plugged up for sure.

I have thought about removing the screen and letting the fuel filter catch the junk but figure with my luck there will be a large chunk of junk that stops up the whole fuel line.

Is there any kind of a coating to put in the tank if I removed it and cleaned it out??

Re: Fiberglass Fuel Tank Problems

It seems as though I heard of some kind of liner you could put in a tank, but I cannot remember what it was. Maybe others will have some ideas. I'm suprised no one else has jumped in with an idea. At least this will get you back to the top of the post... You may want to do a search in the red box above these posts for fuel tank or gas tank...
