Is there a difference between a "marine" coil and an automotive coil-other than costs?

Re: coils

be careful which coil you get. some mercruiser ignitions (thunderbolt 4-5 and maybe some others) are h.e.i. and require a special coil. The std. automotive coil will not work (right) unless you have a points and condenser type ignition. Just went thru this mistake on my 5.7.<br />thought they were the same but they are not. leave it mercruiser to make a special coil that looks exactly like a std. automotive coil.

Not much diff as pertaining to safety issues, but it HAS to be matched to your ignition system. Some external resister needed, some not, some oil filled, some...etc

What type of problems you were having not using a mercrusier coil?

Re: coils

I was having hard start problems. replaced with the correct coil and it starts easier cold and hot. also seems to be running better.
