I have a 1979, 470 mercruiser 170hp. The water pump shaft is worn causing the water to leak past the first seal and out a drip hole. I am told that this shaft is part of the camshaft and I also have seen some parts diagrams that show it to be a separate piece. At any rate there was someone in the forum that mentioned a "speedi sleeve" component that would slip over the worn area and yet would still allow the use of the same seal. Does anyone know where this "speedi sleeve can be purchased?

Do an internet search, SPeedi Sleeve will come up. From what I hear, most bearing suppliers can get them . I also heard that NAPA is a source. Be careful with the front cover since they are NLA (no longer available) from Mercury/Mercruiser.

Here's a link explaining the 3.7L water coolant leak issues and repair.
http://www.outdriveshop.com/470information/470coolantleakrepair.html
I'm also searching for info on Speedi Seal to determine if it will allow repair with out removal of the cam shaft...that would be fabulous.

And YES...exercise extreme caution on the water pump, they are aluminum, can break easily and are getting difficult to find.

I had the same problem and was given the same answer by a marina. Get a speedy sleeve. Well, I ordered it and it never came. I in turn bought the seal and gasket set. I took some fine sand paper and sanded the rusty area on the shaft (Mine was worn and it had a little rust as well). Anyway, I put the seal in a different spot on the front cover. Just forward enough so it wasn't on the worn spot anymore. Luckily there is enough room or play on the front cover that you can do that. That solved my problem and that was at least 8 years ago.
