I have a 1982 24'regal with a 235hp 5.0 omc 800 outdrive. I've been through two sets of gears and now a brand new, not reman gear box. This gear box was good for up to 265hp. The teeth of the gears look the same as the other set I replaced, completely broken off the gears. The oil and magnet had alot of metal. I'm using gear oil recommended for all outboards and steardrives, Im not sure what else to do. Is this too much boat for this drive unit? Is it made to run above a plain for long periods?

Re: omc 800 gear box

Once again my pet peeve has been activated. Why do very few people bother to list where they are located? <br /><br />That aside, I would venture to say that you have a gear box setup problem. I believe your unit is a pure mechanical shift 800 not the hydro-mechanical 800. There are many an 800 running successfully behind 350 motors. I would consult an expert. Granted they are getting fewer and farther between but they are still out there.<br /><br />Also you should be posting this in this forum:<br />"Mercruiser, Volvo and OMC I/O or Inboard Engine Problems". You'd be likely to get better responses there than in the Dockside chat forum.
