All you need is a Normally open temperature switch from your local auto parts store with around a 200° to 210° closing of the switch.
Then get a 12V buzzer from radio shack and some wire and you have an alarm.

why is everybody after 'low cost', 'cheap' and 'inexpensive' for equipement like this?

For me, I'd be looking for the best quality. I'm trying to stop an engine melting down. Why on earth would I risk a $4,000 engine to save a few rotten dollars!!!

Rant over..... :D :D :D

Sometimes your better judgement "kicks in" and you realize something just shouldn't cost what someone wants to charge for it. My $100.00 vacuum cleaner works just fine, I don't need a $2000.00 vacuum to suck dirt from my carpet. I agree with Don, all I need is for a buzzer to sound if my engine gets hotter than it should. Negative from battery to buzzer negative, hot lead from ignition switch to temp switch to buzzer hot....job done. Now....if you have never done anything like this yourself....please pay someone to install a system for you...aChris is right....engines aren't cheap.

Cole Hersee makes a engine warning alarm kit...
takes care of oil pressure and coolant temp...
Kit has a temp switch, an oil pressure switch and an alarm.
Should be less than $40.00.. ($37.33 in iboats mega mall)
COLE#M40177BP

Thanks everyone. The Cole product appears to be what I'm looking for. Now the question is, where will the sender screw into my engine block?

Into the cylinder head as close as you can get it to the hottest point. IE thermostat area.
Your existing temp sender may be installed at the rear of the head, thats ok but your warning system will be best up at the front.
You may need to drill & tap a hole in the front of the head below the thermostat.

Peter

Re: Low cost engine temp alarm?

Im looking at making a basic temperature alarm based on the suggestions in this thread. Searching on the web, I found the following article:

http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/A_2360/article.html

Is that the type of switch I should be looking for? It seems like that switch actually senses the temperature while I was thinking of piggybacking something onto the temp gauge on my dash-- suggestions are greatly appreciated and any links to items and/or directions would be great too!
