Hi All,
My problem is simple hehe:)...a fuel governor ?
I've had this boat 2 years now and it's been great,as long as i keep the rpm's down.
I was told this boat was governed when I bought it and seems to me it would cut back around 2500 or 3000.
Now the engine is cutting back, below or near 2500 rpm's.I can't run the beast full throttle since it's governed near 2500 i believe.
Specs = 86 Bayliner Capri,20',5.0 litre,275 volvo penta.
Looks like the governing device could be electromechanical and sits on the throttle linkage.Wired to a small black box with red reset button.Would this unit have a magnetic sensing device on the crank somewhere ?
It starts good,idles smooth,planes great.

Any help appreciated
ps- nice site guys

Re: Governor maybe acting up

Probably gets a tach (RPM) signal from the coil. If any wires from the device on the throttle linkage or black box heads to the coil, disconnect that wire. Eliminate the tach signal and the governor can't function.

Re: Governor maybe acting up

Will check for wires leading from the throttle linkage to the coil in the morning. If there is I'll disconnect and test run at rated rpm somewhere under 3000 i guess.
I understand it's hard on the engine to run upper rpm's.Would you say 3000 is reasonable on a boat of this type ?

Thanks for the quick reply
SpeedBall out

Volvo's don't have goveners either, that electromechanical devise you mentioned is a combination of the start slave relay and engine circuit breaker (red reset button). Here it is shown without the throttle cable attached.

Sounds like you have problems with your engines running. Filters, plugged fuel system, may just need a good tuneup, including a compression test to find out why the low rpms, change the points & condenser (if you have them), spark plugs, cap and rotor, set the dwell, check the timing, advance timing, adjust carb mixture, set idle etc.

Yep,that's the pic on the start-slave relay and engine circuit brk alright.Matches mine to a tea.
Found no wires running from slave relay to the coil so didn't disconnect anything. Can't be that silly governor idea i had :)
Test ran again this morning below 2300 rpm and ran smooth.Lots of power. Moved it up a touch to around 2500 and still held smooth for 10 mins then started to surge or drop off, pushing then not.
Found out my outdrive is not lifting after lowering.Put it back on the lift and tried the drive tilt, and was not raising. Can't be locking in theDOWN position i guess. That's got to be what's causing the drop in thrust i figure.
Checked around the outdrive for weeds or ropes found nothing. The latching mechanism seems free.Opened the limit sw near the drive tilt motor, is not stuck.
Seems the travel on the rod or cable which operates the limits is not right.
Can't find a limit on the outer side of transom.
Question is is there a limit on both ends ?
When the drive is down does it operate the limit in the engine compartment near the drive-tilt motor ? If i give the drive a shake it drops a bit then it will raise up.Got to be another limit in that frigid water ?
btw, when the drive stops lowering the red lite goes out ok everytime.

Hope this helps explain what's happening.

Re: Governor maybe acting up

Sounds to me like you have 2 problems, a trim issue and an engine performance issue. For ther engine, try removing the gas cap when the surging/stalling happens. Sometimes a vaccuum builds in the tank due to a bad vent. Could also be a multitude of other things like fuel filters, water in the seperator, tank or lines, tune up related issues (plugs, wires, timing, dwell etc.) or even something more serious. Have you checked the oil, does it look normal??

On the trim, I suggest you find every electrical connection and clean them and check for continuity as a fist step.

There is always that possibility.
I loosened the gas cap today and it had no effect.I've checked all connections and cleaned any that looked dirty. The oil looks normal.
Will go over all the tilt connections again.Could be a relay in the limit control box.
I wonder why the outdrive is not locking or dropping into latch position. Will double check the latching mechanism.I don't have trim btw, only tilt.

Thanks for the idea's guys

Re: Governor maybe acting up

Found that bug in the outdrive tilt system.Did some greasing and spying around the outdrive.
There's a 1/8" rod that travels from the latching mechanism up thru a metal tube into the engine compartment to a black box with a micro switch in it.This rod was not making a full stroke causing problems. :)Thanks for all the help on that on guys.

Still having performance problems, seems like it going to die.Speed drops off then picks up.
Probably a fuel problem alright. Will check the fuel filter and change the water separator.

ToodaLoo

Re: Governor maybe acting up

Are you referring to the fuel filter? Not sure where pickup tube is ?
Where is the anti siphon located ?

I'm still a cadet remeber :)

Re: Governor maybe acting up

the pick up tube is right on the gas tank where the hose from the seperator comes from. The antisiphon is the 90 degree bend fitting on the top of the tank. It is a USGC requirement for all boats to prevent gas from siphoning out of the tank is case of a :filp:. Many times this gets sticky or cloged with debris and you get the symptoms you describe.

Installed a new water separator fuel filter yesterday.Checked the tank vent and found some substance in it.Removed the gunk and test ran.
Ran great for 15 minutes at 2500 rpm then began acting i was running out of fuel or it was going to stall.Never stalled thou but the more I try to accelerate the more it chokes.
Seems it only does this after it's heated up.

Re: Governor maybe acting up

I think your on to something. Like Bondo says above too. Your vent looks like the problem. After running for a while a vacuum builds in the tank from the fuel being used from the tank. If no venting then the vacuum will build until the fuel pump cant pull more fuel giving a staving condition. Next run as soon as this happens remove the gas tank fill cap and see if the boat runs normally again. If so your problem is more gunk in the vent system.

Re: Governor maybe acting up

Pulled both ends of the gas tank vent hose off and removed the outer engine compartment fitting also.Blew thru the vent hose with one hand on the opposite end. Some gas came out, enough to soak my hand and also heard a sound like when you spit kleenx balls thru an ink cartridge at your public school teacher...lol.
The outer fitting was clean as was the screen in it.Found no check valve anywhere.
Tried to test run today but both batteries dead,so won't be till tomorrow.

Re: Governor maybe acting up

the check valve Bondo mentioned I am pretty sure is the one on the fuel delivery side, not the vent side. The square 90 degree fitting right at the exit of the tank is a check valve (also known as the antisiphon valve). Remove it and you will find the pick up tube on the inside of the tamk. There is usually a screen in the pick up tube end and it is very common to have this system get "gunk" in it. I think this is whre he wanted you to look while you had the vent apart.

Sounds like you are on the right track.

Just had to post to say that if you haven't been able to run more than 2500-3000 RPM's in the two years you have owned the boat, you are in for a pleasant surprise if/when you get things running properly, and the engine is capable of reaching the 4400-4600 RPM range it was intended to peak at.

Re: Governor maybe acting up

Been doing some searching and reading posts.
Find alot of tips here.
I read u vatter41,got it straight in my head now...thanks --was going to pull off that check valve tomorrow. Also going to check my voltage at the battery while running to see if I have 13 volts.
That plastic hose from pump to carb...It probably used to be clear when new but appears yellow now.Not sure if pump was changed by previous owners. Will blow it out or replace.

liner85 hi there :) ...more fun is a good thing Martha would say
