I am in the process of installing a rebuilt long block after over heating the motor and having it seeze up. The motor is a 1995 4.3 volvo penta SX. I need to now how to check the old exhaust manifolds for cracks. Can I just fill them with water and check for leaks after a few hours or is there a better way?

Take to a dealer and get it pressure tested.

I would bite the bullet and do new man's, as if it looks like you boat in fresh water, should last as long as the motor then

I agree with Robby, why put ten year old manifolds on a new motor? When they do start to leak, then you will have water in your oil and then....... ...JK

From one who's been there, done that... got the T-shirt...

If there is any question at all... Buy new manifolds. Check out ebasicpower.com for GLM replacements with a 3 year warranty.

Thank you for all the feed back. I agree with the reasoning of not taking a chance with 10 year old manifolds. I hope not to have to do this again anytime soon. With that in mind, should the exhaust risers also be replaced?

I would too.

A major problem with the older risers and manifolds is the surfaces deteriate from corrosion and won't seal up properly.
