888, can't find what this switch is ?

In trying to troubleshoot a starter problem, I came across this switch on the back of the 302, near all the shift linkage. It's on the opposite side of the engine from the reverse interlock stuff. It appears to be some type of neutral switch as it has an open circuit when in neutral. When the switch closes(out of neutral) it completes a circuit to ground. Strange part is that the brown wire feeding it seems as though it's grounded already so the switch has little value. So anyone know what the switch might be and if the brown wire should be at ground?

Thanks,

Mark

Just a guess! That sounds like your neutral safety switch. It is supposed to keep you from starting the boat with it in gear. You can bypass it temporarily if you won't to confirm that is what it is, but don't leave it that way!!!

Thanks, thought it might be that but it's at ground regardless of the position of the switch. I can hear a shift in the shift control and thought that might be the safety switch.

Mark

I have an old wiring diagram for a 1974-1977 Mercruiser 898. It shows the brown wire going from the engine connector to the ignition coil minus terminal. It is also connected to the distributor (points) and the shift interrupter switch. If the points are closed, then it will be grounded. I could email you the diagram if I could get your email address. I can't seem to figure out how to contact you directly thru this site. I don't want to post my email address on a public site.

Does sound like a shift interupter switch. Its purpose is to help in shifting OUT of gear only.does this by grounding the ign. circuit for a split second.

What Bt Doctur says....Is it plugged into the back of the circuit breaker? Start the engine and push the switch either way, does it kill the engine? I'll wager it does, and that makes it the shift interrupter switch.....JK
