Completed final assembly of the 350 Vortec today.
Plan on starting tomorrow.
Before I installed the plugs I ran a compression test. The numbers were 185-200!

Will update tomorrow after I fire it up......hope it runs as good as it looks.

10/30:

It's alive!!!

Had a couple of minor problems:

1) Had the wires reversed on the shift interupt switch causing the sensor in the distributor to always be grounded. Once I fixed this it started to kick.

2) Timing wasn't as close as I thought for the first start. Shot a 4' flame out of the carb!

Once I fixed the timing it fired right up! Boy was it smooth. Idled until the thermostat opened (which I replaced with a 160*). Shut off, checked for leaks, found small leaks on the intake manifold where the plugs are installed next to the thermo housing, that was it.

Oil pressure and temp were fine.

Restarted and winterized. Ran 4 gals of RV anti-freeze through the raw water pump and fogged with MM oil. Soaked everything with WD-40.

So far so good. Now we wait for the spring for real test.

Next week I plan on cleaning the boat. My greasy fingerprints are all over the boat!

Hope it runs great for ya Tony!

One comment for others doing the same thing, Run the engine while it's sitting on some blocks before you put it back in the boat. You can check for any leaks (Oil or water) and make sure the timing and carb adjustments all work without crawling around in the bilge or pulling the engine back out because the rear seal leaked.

Didn't have the ability to run it out of the boat, but I know it's a good idea.

I replaced the rear seal.....shouldn't be a problem.

Will know in a few hours.

No comments on the compression numbers? Thought they seemed kinda high.

DonS
I always run new motors on the floor. been bit once. on freebee's motor its not bad to pull it but on a 58"egg harbor its an ordeal.
freebee
next time just block up the mounts, add fuel and water. you can use 4" blower hose to keep the water off the engine or if you have a boat yard try to find some old cut off hardwall hose. then its a simple matter to hot wire it if you dont have a brealout box.
then fire that hummer up.
much better to find the coolant(in my case) leak or oil or fuel leak on the floor than in the hull. mine was a defective core plug behind the flywheel on a 5.7 in a 27 albermarle and I found it after both engines were installed and fired off. port engine had to come back out. lucky for me I was not the one that assembled the block and the reman place paid the second time.
but good luck with it and have a ball.
as far as the numbers give it a few hours and retest.
