I have a 72 Schuster (tahiti) boat, with I believe the original Mercruiser engine 3.0 140hp and outdrive. Due to the wealth of info and help on here I believe the out drive is a pre alpha. I would like to get Mercuary manuals for these. Could you let me know which ones I need. When I went to mercruiser site it didnt accept my SN. also how could I date these and are there any manuals online for either the engine or outdrive.

Mercruiser
H.P 120/140
SN/3354024

Outdrive
Pre Aplpa??
SN3357372

Thanks

Jay

Re: Manuals

Basically, Mercruiser does not use engine dates for anything, only serial number. If serial number tags get lost, most people go by boat year or start looking at GM block numbers to verify the year (most likely a range of years) that block was used.
With the serial number you have, you fall in the range of 68 - 72 Mercruiser 140 serial numbers from 2508261 to 3332137.
Your drive falls in the range of 120/140 drives from 70 to 77 with a serial number range of 2791957 to 4893634, and your drive is actually called a 140 drive for those years. Not just a pre-Alpha that you may hear.
