Circa late seventies, I have no idea what the AQ # is.

A few years ago I bought a boat, it had a knocking noise especially on turns.

My very first posts on this forum was to ask about this noise. I think it was f-inscreenname that helped me (where has he gone, anyway?)

Consequently I replaced - uni's, vibration damper, intermediate bearing/seals/circlips, checked and reshimmmed upper housing bearings, new seals & gaskets etc.

The noise disappeared but eventually returned after about a year but it was not loud and it never got any worse.

Last year I sold the boat, I informed the new owner of the slight knocking noise, he is now ready to tear it down and try to locate the problem.

My one and only question - should this setup have a spigot bearing in the crankshaft to support the intermediate shaft? It does not have one and there is no evidence that it ever had one.

If it had 2 bearings in the intermediate housing (engine bellhousing) then NO, no spigot (Never heard that expression before) bearing. We call the pilot bearing, but I knew what you meant.
Also, if the shaft in the bellhousing had a small end on the crankshaft end, say around 1/2" (13mm) then yes it should have the spigot bearing.
I can do some checking for the AQ number, but the above should answer the question.

No problems, I don't understand teenagers either  .

Spigot, pilot - we use both terms (us aussies are bi-lingual :D )

O/K, I can't remember if it had one or two inter bearings - I think two, but I'll check.

BTW, the bellhousing is made by Ralco, as is the exhaust manifold. They are an aussie company so it may be that this is not a genuine VP package, that's probably why I can't find any reference to an AQ #.
