Jumper leads don't change timing

Gentlemen,
I have a 99 Maxum 181ci, 3.0L Mercury I/O. The timing instructions in my manual says to jump the 2 white leads on my EST distributor before checking the timing. Upon jumping and bypassing the shift interupt switch the timing should be 2 degrees ATDC. Then when the jumper is removed the timing should be 13-17 degrees BTDC.
My timing read 14 BTDC with and without the jumpers. Has anyone experienced this issue? Or does anyone have a solutions? The engine runs OK, just wanted to do some winterizing and checking.
Thanks in advance,
Marty

Re: Jumper leads don't change timing

Did you disconnect the shift interrupt switch and hook the 2 ends going to the engine harness together? Be careful and don't hook the switch wires together, that won't work.
The problem could also be a bad module or wiring going to the module. Check the connections.

According to the manual, I was to disconnect the bypass shift interrupt switch and connect the two ends together. I did......
So, are you saying I should just disconnect the bypass switch wire and leave them unconnected?

Also, you referred to a module. Help me understand what you are referring to. What is the module?
Thanks,
Marty

What manual are you using?

There are 2 things that have to be bypassed, The ignition module (The distributor white wires) and the shift interrupt switch. Are you doing both?

The manual I'm using if 1992-01 Mercruiser Stern Drives by Seloc pages 3-23 and 3-24.
Yes, I connected the 2 white wires with another wire that I striped both ends, and I diconnected the interrupt switch and connected the 2 ends together.
Uh, one other thing. My timing scale is different from the manual. The manual's scale has 5 teeth with one off-set indicating zero. My scale is 6 evenly marked teeth. I'm not sure where 0 degrees is.

That is the one I was asking about. You don't want to hook the wires together on the switches, you want to hook the wires together on the engine harness side.
Regarding the scale, scrape the paint off, there are numbers under it that will tell you where 0 is.

Now you got me wondering about the interrupt switch. I'm not sure that I hooked together the wires going to the switch or the wires going to the engine harness. UUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMM.
I'll have to check that.
Also, thanks for the paint scraping tip.
