While I had my 1973, 165 HP, Mercruiser I drive off too replace the shift cable I figured it would be a good time to replace all the hoses, bellows, and raw water pump. I noticed my old raw water hose behind the drive was kinked when in the fully down position. I measured the old hose against the new one and it is the proper length. I was thinking to stop this from happening in the future I would insert a spring into the hose but I’m having a heck of a time finding a corrosion resistant spring, stainless, brass, etc… I was wondering if anyone knows of a source or has any other ideas to prevent the hose from kinking.

If there was a kink you would have run warm or overheated. If this did not occur ,just put the new one on and check it every year and keep an eye on your temp gage.Make sure you heat the ends of the hose before putting it on so you are sure to get it on all the way.1/4 inch on one connection and a 1/2 inch on the other connection =1/2 of hose to kink.

Thanks for the info Crazy but other then running the boat with muffs on it I never had it in the water. I like the warming the end of the hose idea, I fought many a hose and never thought of that. While running the motor to check it out the pump may have had enough preasure to get the water through so it didn't run warm and until I started taking things apart I didn't relise the hose was kinked. It may have been running warm on the water, I never got to talk to the original owner. You'd think they would have put a bellows type hose there to make it more flexable. I know that if it worked before it should work again but I like to go the extra mile and I got a lot of time on my hands.

You may know this already but thought I would just mention it anway. Dont heat the hose with flame. Use hot water (practically boiling). I use a Fry Daddy for this process. Heats the water fast plus I can plug it into an extension cord and use it right where I am doing the job. Also helps to warm the fitting slightly, that keeps the fitting from cooling the hose to fast.

Hey,that Fry Daddy sounds great.I assemble lots of things using hot as well as cold, and boiling water sounds much better than flame.

DHP

Or you could give it a shot of Merc powertune like the service manual says and it should slide right on

tommays

In my past experience, anything that you apply to help something "slide on"....will also help it to "slide off".Dont want that hose sliding off !!

Re: Mercruiser, kinked raw water pump hose

Thanks for all the info and help guy’s! The only lube I’ve ever used to put a hose on is water it does help and there’s no doubt it’s safe no mater what type of hose your installing. I am gonna try the warm up method too, I’m just waiting on the rest of my parts to come in before I dig in. I never did find the spring I was originally looking for, I got a lot of funny looks from people when I asked for one. There’s a lot of different types of hydraulic and air hose that have extra support in them but they are to stiff for my application. Oh well, that hose lasted 33 years hopefully this one will do the same because it sure is a long walk home when you break down on the water.
