I am trying to find out the normal operating temp for raw water cooled, Volovo Penta AQ240A/280. My temperature guage was not working and I ran a new lead from the gauge to the sensor, the engine read 190, but remained cool to the touch. I disconected the lead and re attached it and nothing read at the gauge. i have yet to try a new gauge which I have already purchased. Before changing the manifolds and risers the temp guage always read 165.

Re: Normal Operating Temp

Could be the sender. Buy (or borrow) one of those temp guns and see what the temp actually is, be real silly to replace the manifolds because of a bad temp sender. When was the last time the raw water pump impeller was changed. You seem to be heading for the worst case/most expensive fix without even checking any of the normal things.

Re: Normal Operating Temp

Water pump impeller changed a year ago. I replaced the Manifolds and risers because there was no history on the old ones and they were leaking from the gaskets. (I purchased the boat in November) the engine always ran at 165 until after the manifold change then qat 190. Could the new manifolds cause a more forceful water flow situation and have caused the sender to malfunction? By the way I did replace the temp gauge and it reads 200. Also is there a particular sequence for the washers on the sender? I have the non-metal washer first on the sender then the flat washer then the lead connection and then the lock washer. Would these in the wrong order cause a faulty reading? I will look at getting a temp gun. Thanks Don for your help.

Re: Normal Operating Temp

No sealant used between riser gasket and manifold, why? So far I've started it about 7 times after the change and no leaks.

Just to update, I have replaced the old temp guage that was bad and installed a new one. The temp gun reads 158 at and around the sender. The guage reads 200. I am presuming that its the sender thats gone bad. What do you think? Is there anything else that could cause this scenario?

Re: Normal Operating Temp

I forgot to add I did take the old sender out and test in water on the stove. I was getting a reading at different temperatures, higher as the water got hotter. So I was presuming it wasnt dead.

The sender and guage NEED to be matched different brands use different OHM ranges for the single

GUAGE TEST

tommays
