Just purchased an '84 Stingray runabout with a Mercruiser model MCM 140 engine. Where can I find a manual for the engine? One for the boat would be nice too. First boat, would like to be prepared....

Thanks,

Dave

Re: Manual?

If your any kinda Mechanic,........
Your going to find it's Worth the extra money for a Factory Manual for the engine,+ drive........

If you're a DIYer,........
You'll probably be able to get by with an Aftermarket Manual,.......

For the Boat,....... You'll find they're pretty Genaric.......
All the boat builders buy from the same suppliers,...... Taco rails,... Taylormade windows,....etc.....

If you're Just Looking to Learn about the Ins,+ Outs of your boat,..............

You've Found the Place,...........
The Knowledge here in the iboats forums, both Live,+ the Archives,...... Can't be Bought,....... Anywhere.........

Welcome Aboard......... :)

Re: Manual?

Thanks Bondo, I guess I'm kindof between the mechanic and the DIY. Aftermarket manuals -- is that like Seloc? And is the best place to get a Factory manual would be directly from Mercruiser? Or is there a better option? Thank you!
Dave

Re: Manual?

You can order the manuals directly from Mercruiser, but you need an engine serial number to do that. You actually need service manual #3 for your engine, the link Bondo gave you is for the 90-97 vintage engines.
Here is one possibility for purchasing the manual online, for the same price, you can go to your local Mercruiser dealer and make friends with them.
http://www.stemtostern.com/catalog/displayproductdetails.asp?DepartmentInventoryRefID=444640
Ebay is another option.
The manual for your drive is #6, here is a link to the Merc online manual.
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf

Personally, I would avoid the Clymers manuals at all costs, to many mistakes to even make it usable. Seloc is only slightly better.

Re: Manual?

I've used stem to stern. They are very good. No tax or shipping (if you spend over $100).

I bought the factory manual for my drive, and I'll be buying the engine manual before the season. There is no substitute for the real manual. Don't waste your time with an aftermarket one.

Re: Manual?

Thank you Don and Bondo!! So, I need the #3 and #6 service manuals to get me started right. Will hunt ebay first, don't mind the cd-rom version. Just got the boat, and want to do all the maintainance items, etc first before even putting it in the water. Not sure what has been or has not been done in the past.....
Dave
