Tying down the transom

Hi,

I have always used nylon rope to tie the transom down to the trailer. The main reason for this was to have some degree of "suspension" if that makes any sense, or otherwise explained not to have a rigid force on the transom that could cause cracking.

The problems with this is that it is extremely difficult to tie adequately with nylon and secondly the nylon has a tendency to "relax" after a while.

Have just bought 2 x 1/2 inch turnbuckles (1/2 inch being the diameter of the thread). The boat is a 17' fibreglass bowrider. Can I use the turnbuckles to tie direct from the transom to the trailer or should I have a loop of nylon rope inserted in between?

Cheers
Andrew

Invest in a transom saver. Sure does save wear and tare on transom.

Hi,

am a little confused. Does the transom saver not stop the stress from the outboard bouncing up and down? This would be some form of support from the lower unit to the trailer?

I may not have been clear, I am talking about tying the boat down to the trailer when in transit. To stop the boat bouncing up and down.

Cheers
Andrew

Hi Andrew
Anything Nylon is going to stretch a bit. Be it rope or straps. Even the bow winch strap. However unless you are really good at tieing what we call "truckers knott" in which you use your body weight to chinch them, I'd say use 2 inch (wide) transom tie downs. About 20 bucks and use the buckel to tighten them up. Quick, easy and in case of a accident the insurance companies like them. Between the buckel letting loose a little and the strap stretching it will not make a tight union between the trailer and boat.

Hope this helps a bit
Link

Get a transom tie-down w/ a quick release buckle.
It's a 1" wide strap w/ hooks & a buckle that cinches down tight when locked.
Starbrite Sta-Put @ Boat US.
