Re: Hydraulic Steering
Fly Rod,

That front seal costs $0.35 and takes 5 minutes to replace. You do not need to bleed the system after having changed it. A set of replacement rear seals, in the steering cylinder, cost about $75 if you buy it from Teleflex but they can be had for around $10 from most any hydraulics shop. They take about an hour to replace and if you are very careful and hold the cylinder upright as you replace the seal glands you won't have to bleed the system after that is one either.

On that front seal, the seal itself has a 1" ID and is 1/8" thick. The seal itself has square shoulders. To replace it you remove the wheel and that will expose the front of the helm unit. There is a small plate that his held in place with three screws. When you remove the screws and the plate the seal lies directly under it. You pop the old seal out with a screwdriver and then push the new seal in with your fingertips. Replace the cover and screws, reattach the steering wheel, and you are on your way. You need to be a little quick when you remove the old one and stick in a new one to avoid dripping fluid, but if you are reasonably quick you only loose a few drops. By the way, the last time I noticed mine was starting to leak I just called Teleflex and they sent me a seal for free. If you find yours is leaking just a bit you can sometimes just remover it, flip it over, and stick it back in as a temporary fix until you get a replacement. It will ususally hold juice back for a couple of weeks, but of course its not a permanent fix.

Thom
