I have an alpha gen II, 1993 115hsp. Bought it used last season. I changed gear lube yesterday and parts of the lube were discoloured dark, maybe even brownish. I read somewhere, this is a sign water is getting into the drive. Is that true? Is it a major project to reseal drive? What type of performance problems result from this issue.

when water mixes with the gear lube it turns a milky white. If there are no traces of whitish oil then there is no water.

It is normal for the gear lube, just about any gear lube, to turn brownish and/or blackish with use and time. It also does not mean that the oil requires changing if the oil is getting brown or black in color.

OK, thanks guys, I'm feeling better now. There most definetly no sign of anything white in the green colored Merc Gear lube. So the brownish is with use and time. I got boat last season used and not sure when the lube was changed last.

fur on the magnet is normal, but you can clean it off and recheck after next run to make sure it doesn't all come back....

A 13 year old drive? If nothing else, you should give it a pressure and vaccum check, just to be sure.
