Got a issue. My manifolds use pencil zincs. When I was draining the motor for the winter I pulled the two brass plugs ( the zincs screw into the plug) on the manifolds and one came out pretty much intact. The other was gone. It must have unscrewed itself and is now inside the manifold. I have had the motor running a couple times today and there is no restrictions. I have tried to reach up in there with forceps but can not find it (the boat hasn’t moved either since I found it missing) . The manifolds are harder then the worst set of headers you have ever dealt with taking them off and on. What should I do?

Re: Lost zinc

I think if it was mine, I'd put both new zincs in and go boating. There is the possibility that it corroded away and removing the manifolds could reveal nothing. I don't believe even if the zinc is in there that it would cause a problem. If it is in there it will eventually corrode away.

"There is the possibility that it corroded away"<br />First season on the manifolds. The other zinc is mostly there. <br />"I'd put both new zincs in and go boating."<br />Thats the plan but didn't want to create a "Hot spot by leaving it in there. I guess I will check now and then for it after rides. See if it bounces back over to the drain.

A lot of things I can do but changing the laws of physics is not one of them.

Re: Lost zinc

This will give ya sleepless nights. I wouldn't worry about it, but its not my boat. I've got an idea though. Those infrared Thermometers have come way down in price. Pick one up, shoot some readings around the motor, and take it from there. It will give you some piece of mind. And they are fun to play with anyway. And don't thing it hasn't ate itself up. I have one in my aluminum man, and its gone yearly. Should be some left though. Wish ya luck.....

Re: Lost zinc

The base will usually still be there as small as it may be.If it is not ,then I would replace the partially eaten one and dont put one in the lost zinc side for this season. If it is there it will be gone before the end of the year.
