Hi, I have 1975 OMC I/O. I have removed the tilt motor, clutch gear and assembly next step in my manual is remove the retainer plate (shown with 3 bolts) to get to the worm shaft but i dont have a cover with 3 bolts the end of shaft is sealed, possibly welded by a previous owner? with no sign of any way to remove, any suggestions or alternative ways of getting my worm shaft out?

Thanks
Chris

Re: OMC Tilt Worm Shaft

How about a foto chris? I have a '75 as well.
Originally the worm shaft was held in by a cap and circlip. Unlike later models, it did not come with the retainer. There was/is a retrofit retainer that could have been installed.

The circlip grove was prone to corrosion, allowing the worm shaft to be spit out if you dropped the outdrive hard. If someone welded that shaft in, you are in deep doo doo.

You need to get them hosted on a site like: http://photobucket.com/

Once done, copy the foto link and paste it in the "image" box using the bottom right button in the 'post a reply' box. (full reply form)

Yep Chris, someone sure buggered that one up. If you have to get at it, it's gonna be time for a 'new' intermediate housing. Keep an eye on ebay. they show up all the time. Just remember they are not all the same. You can either get the whole shebang (bell housing included) or just the intermediate housing.

Boy I hate butchers, especially when they pawn their junk off on someone else.

Chris,
I may be able to help you out, but they kinda frown on advertising here even though it would just be tring to help you out. I don’t know if what I got would be interchangeable with yours. If you’d like to contact me privately you can do so at daveg16101 at aol com.

Re: OMC Tilt Worm Shaft

So im trying to see if it is absolutely necessary to remove the shaft. Heres what my problem was when i hit the tilt switch the motor would spin and i would here almost a grinding sound but no movement at all helping it didnt work either.
When i took out the tilt motor it is clear that something is broken.
I wasnt able to find/remove the hammer blow coupling as was shown in my book but there was a piece that ive posted a picture of that is broken, since i coudnt get anything else out on the motor side i was trying to remove the shaft to see what i could get from that end. Any other suggestions?
Broken piece : http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8AcN2jhy0aN3wA

Re: OMC Tilt Worm Shaft

Can't get a clear picture from from your fotos. I assume that the pictured pieces all came from the tilt motor end as opposed to coming out of the clutch box?

Does the hammer blow coupler have two distinct parts, loosely linked together? (picture boat018) Does the motor still have the notched end on it's shaft? With the clutch pack out can you reach in and turn the worm drive shaft (upper end is notched like the tilt motor armature shaft), or turn it by hand from within the clutch box?

The picture 2020 looks like a broken aluminum casting or bushing. Does your camera have a macro function? (up close)

Here is a parts breakdown. It is of a later model but the tilt drive mechanism will be the same. There just aren't too many parts there to have those broken pieces from.

link

Re: OMC Tilt Worm Shaft

looking at the pics, it appears that the coupling is broken.try turning the shaft like Boomyal says.
