OMC Tilt Worm Shaft Problem

75 OMC outdrive, Im trying to remove the worm shaft. It had been welded in by a previous owner, i have grinded off the weld and cap (with some minor damage to the intermediate houseing) but i still cant get the shaft out. According to the book i need to remove the retainer bearing and o ring seal but how? the bearing can be rotated in the housing so it is free but i cant get it out, any advice would be appreciated!<br /><br />Thanks<br />Chris

It's a bushing, not a bearing. The shaft should exit out the rear. It's probably being held in by the clutch pak gear assembly. Did you remove the clutch pak and the ring gear??

I removed the clutch assembly but the clutch housing gear (I think is the same as the ring gear) Its a large round gear (gold color) and its outside teeth fit into the grooves on the shaft. It won't come out until the shaft is free its loose but it wont budge.

Hi,<br /><br />there is a quick tip about this in the OMC service manual. <br /><br />"Before removing clutch pack and gear, remove retaining ring and LIFT THE DRIVE FORCEFULLY. This will eject the worm gear and bushing."<br /><br /><br />Also, I just wanted to note that this message did not work for me -- mine was too stuck. Although it is not the recommended way to do it, I used a VERY LARGE flat head screw driver (A bronze or brass drift punch of a large size would be better), I inserted it into one of the slots where the clutch pack goes and hit it HARD with a hammer. MAKE SURE you drive it the correct way. Put the screw driver or punch in one of the bottom slots and force it to rotate forward. Mine took about a dozen blows to eject.<br /><br />Hope this helps )
