Hi all,

I currently have a Ford Indmar 351 Permanent Magnet reduched gear starter in my ford 351: Like this one.

http://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=RK122014

It has a built in relay/solinoid switch on the back, but this starter is now dead (soliniod is fine) so I ordered a new one and got: Older style with only 1 connection on back, so no relay/soliniod!! Like this one.

http://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=ARC70101

Question is can I just remove the relay/soliniod from my broken one and use it on the new one i have, or does the new type Permanent Magnet reduched gear starter do other things with the solinoid??

Hope this makes sense..

cheers
ross

But isn't a starter soliniod just a relay that passes full current when current is applied to the switch terminal, reversing the field, and pushing the rod up? I was wondering if the soliniod on the first one was used by the starter for something else, other than being a relay?

ross

I believe on your first pic, with the solenoid on the starter, is that has 2 functions- one is as an electrical switch which you expect from a solenoid. The other is it moves the starter pinion out to engage the flywheel on the engine.
Your second pic only needs power to run, the engagement of the starter pinion happens automatically when power is applied to the starter. No big deal, just 2 different starter designs. What you need for the new starter is to add a remote solenoid. Any 3 or 4 pole solenoid will do. You can buy them at a marine store for $40-50 or you can pick the same thing up at an auto store for $10. The biggest problem will be the idiot at the register not knowing how to find it because you don't give him a year/make/model car. You may get lucky at a Napa or independent store where they know what a solenoid is. Ford's are most common for remote solenoids, this is what you need

FYI, I replaced my 1976 starter on my 351w with one from overton's, $149. best thing I ever did. If yours is the 4 1/2", with 2 holes slightly offset then it's the same as mine. Also found same thing at shop.com looking for pic, for same price
Ross, ya went backward. The first starter was the better one. It has higher torque and better speed You should take yours to a local starter rebuilder then you would not have to be concerned with re-wiring as ron described. It would also be cheaper.
