Mercruiser Popping Noise

I have an odd problem that I was wondering if anyone had ever encountered. I have a 1999 Merc 5.0, 220 HP. When the engine get's to about 2500 RPM's there a a Popping Noise (like loud popcorn) that seem to be coming from the exhaust outtake. When I slow way down the popping goes away. <br /><br />Has anybody ever encounterd such a thing?

Sounds like it may be running lean. Check the fuel delivery system for problems. You do not want to run it under load like this. You could break expensive parts that way. First thing I'd do is install a new fuel filter. If that fixes it, you should sort out why the old filter was clogged and certainly have a spare or two (and a container to hold the used filter(s)) on board future use.<br /><br />If fuel delivery checks out OK, look into an electrical problem like plug wires or cap and rotor. My money's on a fuel problem though.

patras, along the elec. side of the idea above. that was my problem. i had the popcorn popin sound too. i'm embaressed to say it was my own fault too. i had put me on a new main pos batt. wire. strung across the transom from the batt on the port side to the starter on the starboard side. long story short. i didn't get the wire tied up good. it slipped down on the the drive shaft and of corse rubbed it till i had a main batt. wire to ground. man was i lucky i had no fuel leaks as the sparks were flyin as i was playin jr. arc welder and didn't even know it. good thing i knew that i had a elec. problem though as the gages were goin crazy. still had a half a main batt. wire when problem was found....don't beat me up to badly for my stupidity. i'm just passin along what my popcorn sound was.....hope yer problem is different. mine was an easy fix. just scared me as to what had happened though. felt i was moments from going boom, that's all........
