I had to replace 1 of the engines in my boat due to freeze damage.
1988 Ford 302 Pleasure Craft straight inboards.
This boat has twin engines.
I replace the engine with a rebuilt long block.
Transferred all my old parts over.
Now when I start this new engine the water out the exhaust is foamy/oily. The other engine is nice clear smooth water.
Also, this rebuilt engine doesn't run smoothly at all. It will idle fine, but when you give it gas, it spits & backfires.
I rebuilt the Holley 4 barrel on it. Still doesn't seem to help.
Any ideas to check?
Where/how can I hook a vacuum gauge to this carb? The big hose running to the pcv valve?
Thanks for your help.

Alot of things come to mind.
Is it counter-rotating?
Was the original?

Make sure the ignition is in proper form. When a new /rebuilt is coughing sputtering on first startup, it's usually something wrong there.

standard rotation on this one.
My biggest fear is a poor rebuild job.
I say this because the rebuilder didn't run a tap through the damper bolt hole nor did they remove the water jackect drain plugs when they vatted the engine before the rebuild.
I had to buy a 5/8" - 18 tap to retap the damper bolt and had to redrill one drain plug and retap with a 1/4" pipe tape, again which I had to buy.
My biggest concern is if this rebuilder cut corners on this simple stuff, what did they do on the major stuff?

My biggest fear is a poor rebuild job.
Let me guess, he was also the lowest bidder, right?
Everyone always wants the lowest/best price for everything, when it doesn't work, they want the service and warranty of the most expensive place at the price of the cheap place....... Right??

Look at all the threads here asking for best price, not best quality.

BTW, I don't expect an answer either :)

Now this is info based on a stock motor not one
with a fancy cam grind with overlap or other
performance grind conditions.or any non stock items

The water problem, if all seals , plugs
general piping hook-ups are correct then:
Head gasket on backwards/upside down, wrong one.

Intake manifold gasket misaligned/wrong
manifold cocked

valve timing, chain off a tooth or cam sprocket aligned with advance/retard position instead of stock, 180 deg off
Back fire timing related, effect of mis aligned
timing chain to gear, crank.
Distrubutor in 180 deg out.
check firing order.
Verify top dead center condition of crank
and #1 cyl valve train closed.

That should keep you busy.
Remember you are there, your eyes see
don't let anyone tell you what to do
check all spec from eng manu books
follow install instructs from proper
manuels/procedures. Only you can
repair it, I can only throw out possibilities
and would never tell "this is what it is"
Good Luck

No Don S it wasn't the cheapest (and so what if it were?).
If you have good suggestions of things to check please offer them.
If you want to be a smart a$$, take a long walk off a short pier.

Reminds me of a song, Bad to the Bone, doctor said leave this one along, he's bad to the bone. I'll be surprised if there are any more responses to this thread.

bama .....

Sometimes I can't help myself. Seems like this 'rebuilt' really wasn't 'rebuilt' and should have been the "cheapest".Maybe it was rebilt.

Also to ask advice, and then call responders smart a$$$$ seems to me to be a bit in poor taste.

But what do I know.Don S. is such a newbie here. So who can vouch for him (GRIN)

DHP

Bad to the bone ..... ROCKS

I Guess I'd be looking at All the Stuff you Reused from the Frozen Motor,.........
Maybe an Oil Cooler is Leaking into the Cooling water stream,.........

And,...... Backfires are Usually caused by a Lean Condition,......
Your Holley may need a more in-depth Rebuild,.. or even Replacement......
Or,.. Maybe it's just a Vacuum Leak,..??.....
Also to ask advice, and then call responders smart a$$$$ seems to me to be a bit in poor taste.
And,..... While I'm here,.......
Any Grease IS, in fact Better than No Grease At All,........

Having Some Antifreeze,...... Probably would Not be Any Good At All,.....Matter of Fact,... There's Plenty of posts going around that people have Frozen their motors from Poorly Winterized Anti-Freezed Blocks Too..........

Just because YOU can't figure out HOW to Thoroughly Drain your Block,..............
Doesn't make it All Right,...... To continuiously Harrass Me with Your new tag-line........

My Information Was,+ Is Still Good,........
And,... It's Not My Fault that You Screwed it Up.................

Good Luck,............

I found out why this engine ran so poorly.
Turns out the rebuilder sent me an engine with the 1-5-4 etc. firing order instead of the 1-3-7 etc. firing order.
I'm interested in seeing how he intends to handle this.
