Need some help here, Merc 1993 4.3LX with full closed system. When I winterized it I fogged the carb & cylinders. Over winter I replaced the exhaust manifolds & risers & replaced intake manifold. Was going to change the oil before taking it out today to get the fogging oil out from winterizing it. She started up fine, kept it on the water muffs for 15 minutes to heat the oil up, throttled her up and down with no problems, then shut her down. When I drained the oil it wasnt that thick, pretty thin. It had a light brown tint, not white (milkshake). All parts are new (mani's & riser's). What could this be ???? Thank You!!

jgw, It could just be moisture that got in when doing the engine work and sitting over the winter.
I had my 4.3 apart and the headgaskets replaced, intake and exhaust gaskets too.
I know some water got in the oil when the manifolds were pulled. So i changed oil and filter and kept an eye on the oil the first few hours of running.Problem solved.
Change your oil and filter...try that first anyway..Good Luck.

The Oil that was just drained was new at start of fall, brand new oil. I Havent put any new oil in yet since the drain an hour ago, wanted to get some info from the forum before my next step.

But that was the oil that was in it during engine work? Throw a new filter on and fill it up. I bet it's fine :D

Re: Water or Fogging oil ???

I had the same thing happen to me this year on my V/P AQ130C 4 cyl...changed oil/filter and fogged in the Fall, then a few weeks ago after I started the engine for the first time this year and ran it for a bit in the driveway, I found what appeared to be milky looking oil when I checked the oil. I changed the oil and filter (the right amount of oil came out during draining so I would presume the milky look was not from water) and all has been fine in a couple of outings. I never knew fogging oil thru the carbs (I have dual 1 BBL carbs) would cause milky looking oil. A freind suggested that perhaps condensation might have caused it or perhaps a very small gasket leak somewhere allowed water/AF to mix with the oil. I know it was a very wet winter in No. California but the boat was covered very well all winter, so there is no way water got into the engine that way.

Tahoe Bob, I hope I have the same luck as you. I will have to say that it looks as if the same amount of oil came out as went in during the Fall. I keep going out to look at the bucket full of old oil, its now pretty dark but still thin.

Re: Water or Fogging oil ???

I changed the oil again, a little better but I noticed a drip of antifreeze on the side of the exhaust manifold comming from the gasket. I figure if that is happening, then it could be happening internal. Will change gaskets tomorrow.
