Ok guys, Im at the phase of my teardown where the only thing left to do is get rid of the 'edges' the old fiberglass left behind on the hull. Would this be done easiest with a grinder spinning a cutoff wheel?

Thanks once again

Re: Tool question

try a DA sander with 40grit paper....that way you don't dig too deep and it cuts the stuff you want to remove really good.

Re: Tool question

I used a small angle grinder with a regular grinding wheel for metal and it worked fine. I could get as close as I wanted without cutting too deep. you can click on my home page and see a few pics of my restoration.

Grinding wheel on angle grinder works good. You can manage how deep it goes, and it can take material down quick if you want it too or finesse it if needed. It does throw dust, but there isn't much of a way around that.

Re: Tool question

3M makes a layered sandpaper disc for angle grinders. I used one when I redid my ski locker floor, and it took off the material about three times as fast as the regular grinding wheel and left the surface much smoother and was much easier to control. I think I picked it up at wallyworld or menards for about five bucks.

Re: Tool question

Thanks guys! I figured an angle grinder would be best for the job.

Re: Tool question

I use a 4.5" angle grinder for lots and lots of jobs, sometimes with a grinding wheel in it and sometimes with 36 grip stiff paper in it. I think its one of the handiest tools you can own. I need to tell you this though.

Last year I had to replace the springs on my trailer, along with the very rusted bolts that were holding them in place. The trailer was in NC and so I took my grinder down and used it to cut off the bolts. I got something in my eye. The next day, which was a sunday, it was hurting something awful but I had to drive home (just over 500 miles), which I did. By monday morning it was intollerable. I called the eye doctor and told them I had something in my eye - they said come right on down. I did. There was a sliver of steel stuck into my eyeball, he had to use a 'drill' to remove it. Please be careful with that grinder and please wear eye protection.

Thom

I like those layered discs by 3M that quantumleap
mentioned...very safe and quick to take material off...I've never seen one of those come apart...just a Thought

Re: Tool question

When my disc would gum up I ran it against concrete and that got most of the gum off.

Yeah, the eye thing is no joke. I always wear safety glasses. I wear contacts so it doesn't take much to make my day miserable as it is.

Re: Tool question

JasonJ where do I get concrete at? :D
Sounds good but how often do you have to clean the disk? Should I get a concrete block and place it in the boat? I'd hate to climb in and out to clean the disk every 5 minutes.

Re: Tool question

Im sure a large smooth rock would do the job almost as well.

Re: Tool question

A grinder works well. Also a dremel with a collet and a bunch of cuttoff wheels works too if your are in tight places or if he glass is not too thick.
It is amazing what you can to with these little things
H90

Re: Tool question

If I remember rightly, I only did the concrete bit a couple of times during the entire grind fest, and I had ground the entire interior of the hull shell.
